DRAGON, the first 80m COLUMBUS

Onyx Marine Automation installed on DRAGON, the first 80m COLUMBUS

Onyx Marine Automation is now the technological partner for the automation of Dragon, the new 80m Columbus Classic motoryacht built by the Palumbo Superyachts shipyard.

Measuring 79.50m in length with a beam of 13m and rated at over 2,100GT, the Columbus 80m Classic is easily the largest yacht Palumbo has launched to date and features classically elegant lines.

Dragon will be delivered to the owner this summer and celebrate her world premiere at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The yacht is fitted with the Onyx Marine automation system, designed in association with the Palumbo shipyard technical office.

Dragon is large not only in size but also in the significant complexity of the automation system which includes an optical fiber Ethernet network, over 1300m of CAN-bus cables, 73 nodes handled and around 2000 I/O on-board channels controlled by Onyx Marine. The system is managed by means of a second CPU which acts as a hot-swap backup unit, ready to take over from the main unit seamlessly if required. Moreover, a second Ethernet and CAN-bus network have been added to provide full functionality in order to ensure complete continuity in back-up mode and unparalleled levels of safety. It also includes all active alarms and alarms history management.

Navigation lights and all dimming external lights are fully controlled by the new powerful Dimmer modules by Onyx Marine Automation.

The clear, elegantly designed graphic interface is in line with Palumbo superyachts smart, well-known style, and has the immediacy and usability of all Onyx Marine graphics.

The great advantage of the Onyx Marine system onboard the Dragon superyacht is that almost the entire system has been tested remotely. The Onyx Marine Remote Support Staff and onboard electrician checked, upgraded and configured the whole monitoring system remotely. This allowed the Customer to save time, work and costs without forgoing high standards of quality and safety.
